For over 10 years, Bafang has been one of the world's largest manufacturers of components for e-bikes. In Europe, its electric motors have become the de-facto standard. In the last five years, however, it has focused intensively on the production of mid-drive motors.

Bafang has recently launched the new M510 mid-drive motor, the successor to the M500, which is designed especially for high-performance e-bikes.

The M510 motor has a higher overall torque curve, which is clearly noticeable during extreme support at high cadence, making it ideal for steep climbs that are a common part of technical ascents.

Although the M510 motor has a similar power and torque profile to the M500, it is half a kilogram lighter, with a weight of just 2.9 kg. The weight savings are the result of several design changes, the main one being the new magnesium housing. 

The motor software has been reconfigured for smoother start-up and better controllable acceleration. The integration of a responsive torque sensor also helps the power delivery feel smoother and more natural — as if the motor assistance were just an extension of the rider's pedaling effort, rather than a sudden surge of power like on a motorcycle. These features allow for better handling into short corners or sharp climbs.

Thanks to the high sensitivity of the torque sensor, the Bafang M510 motor can estimate the right amount of power according to the rider's pedaling force and deliver the corresponding assistance.

      

The M510 motor is compatible with most products from the Bafang portfolio, such as the Intube battery, DP E180/181 displays with a clean LED HMI, an optional upgraded color version DP C242 HMI, a hidden speed sensor with two different magnetic fixation solutions, and the upcoming new Bafang APP."
 

The M510 mid-drive motor is a revolutionary upgrade to the powerful eMTB motor. Compared to the previous generation, the maximum torque of the M510 motor remains at 95 N.m, but the weight has been reduced by 18%, while the maximum power output has increased by 20%. The maximum cadence support is extended up to 120 rpm.

It will find its use mainly in the mountain e-bike (eMTB) and speed pedelec segment, which perfectly matches its parameters. The M510 is equipped with a torsion (pressure) sensor; the control unit evaluates how hard the rider pushes on the pedals and regulates the motor power accordingly. The electric motor offers an output of 250 watts and a torque of 95 newton meters. Just like with the M500 motor, the maximum speed is 25 km/h, or 45 km/h depending on the type of use and applicable legal regulations. The motor features smooth and quiet operation, especially when changing gears, even when riding uphill. The motor supports a gear sensor.
