Shimano News: Mechanical Shifting and Uncompromising Brakes

While electronic shifting has been making magazine headlines in recent years, Shimano hasn't forgotten those who swear by the reliable, mechanical classic without batteries and worries. The Japanese giant has introduced completely redesigned Shimano DEORE and DEORE XT mechanical groupsets along with revolutionary braking components. These new additions will please both traditional mountain bikers and owners of modern e-bikes, for which they bring specific solutions.

⚡ Main trump cards for e-bikes: Durability and safety first

shimano news

Due to the strong motor pull, e-bikes (e-MTB) put extreme stress on the entire drivetrain and require uncompromising braking performance. Shimano responds to this in the new groupsets with several major innovations:

Single-shift levers (cassette protection):

In both the DEORE (SL-M6210) and DEORE XT (SL-M8210) groupsets, we find special versions of shift levers designed exclusively for e-MTB. These levers only allow shifting down by one gear per click. This prevents unwanted multi-shifting under full motor power, which could irreversibly damage the cassette.

New thick rotors (2.2 mm):

The weight of e-bikes places huge demands on the brakes. Shimano is therefore introducing massive rotors with thickness increased from the standard 1.75 mm to 2.2 mm. They are available in 200 mm and 220 mm diameters for both 6-bolt and CENTER LOCK mounting. The result? Fundamentally better heat dissipation, more stable braking performance, and less fatigued hands during long, steep descents. Additionally, these rotors offer a longer lifespan and higher bend resistance in the event of a crash.

Betting on LINKGLIDE technology:

Both groupsets keep e-bikers in mind with the option of an 11-speed system featuring LINKGLIDE technology (for DEORE the RD-M7230 derailleur and SL-M6230 lever, for XT the derailleur with an 11-50T cassette). LINKGLIDE is designed with maximum mechanical durability in mind, specifically under high motor assistance.

🛠️ General novelties: Derailleurs that can take a hit

shimano news

The new components take key design elements from the top-tier Di2 electronic series and forge them into a mechanical form.

Derailleurs inspired by the Di2 series

shimano news

The new DEORE (M6200/M7200) and DEORE XT (M8200 with SHADOW ES technology) derailleurs come with an ultra-low, wedge-shaped profile that has no protruding edges. Thanks to this, they easily slide over rocks or stumps and instantly jump back into position without missing a gear.

The design is also optimized for modern derailleur hangers. During a strong upward impact, the hanger absorbs most of the force. This protects the derailleur itself and the frame from catastrophic damage, saving your wallet.

70% higher chain tension

Both derailleurs utilize a new chain stabilizer system with a dual spring. This increases the tension force by a full 70%. The result is a much firmer wrap around the cassette, stable chain management in rough terrain, and smooth shifting, even if the cassette teeth are already partially worn. The cage and pulleys have also been improved – the rigid construction minimizes the risk of dirt and branches from the trail getting tangled in the mechanism.

🎛️ Ergonomics and cockpit: Faster and more confident response

shimano news

You will feel the changes immediately on your thumb. The new shift levers have a modified, shorter throw and provide a much clearer and sharper response upon clicking. In the DEORE XT series, a firmer "second click" and a replaceable rubber pad for better finger traction in any weather are also pleasing additions. The optimized lever angle ensures that the thumb stays in comfortable contact throughout the entire shifting stroke.

🛑 DEORE brakes: Top-tier technology accessible to everyone

shimano news

The DEORE series has made a huge leap forward thanks to "trickle-down" technology – that is, by adopting proven systems from the elite XTR and DEORE XT series.

The new brake levers (BL-M6200) utilize the famous SERVO WAVE mechanism. This ensures a very fast pad travel towards the rotor in the initial phase of the pull, followed by a smooth, highly modifiable increase in braking power.

Options:

The system can be paired either with the uncompromising 4-piston caliper (BR-M6220), ideal for e-MTB and enduro, or the lighter 2-piston caliper (BR-M6200).

Consistent performance at any temperature:

The brakes received improved internal sealing and completely new mineral oil with low viscosity. This guarantees stable operation and a predictable response at the lever, whether you are riding in the summer heat or in freezing winter conditions.

Transition to 200 mm

A minor but great piece of news for mechanics and home DIYers is that with the new thick rotors, Shimano is abandoning the non-traditional 203 mm diameter and moving to a pure 200 mm. This fundamentally simplifies the installation and adjustment of the brakes. Fewer spacers and adapters are needed for optimal caliper positioning relative to the rotor, and Shimano intends to gradually apply this step to its other rotor models as well.

⚙️ Cassettes for every pocket and style

shimano news

For 12-speed DEORE cassettes, Shimano gives riders a clear choice based on preferences:

  • DEORE CS-M7200 (Lighter variant): Combines durable steel sprockets with the largest aluminum sprocket (10-51T range) for sports-oriented riders keeping an eye on weight.
  • DEORE CS-M6200 (Maximum lifespan): All-steel construction with the same 10-51T (510%) range. It is designed to withstand season after season of harsh treatment, making it the ideal candidate for long-term use on e-bikes.

In the DEORE XT (M8200) series, riders have a choice of 12-speed HYPERGLIDE+ variants with ranges of 9-45T or 10-51T, or the already mentioned 11-speed durable LINKGLIDE system with an 11-50T range.

Maximum reliability

shimano news

The new mechanical groupsets prove that even without batteries, it is possible to achieve top-tier durability, precise operation, and modern geometry of components. Whether you are looking for maximum reliability on your e-bike or want an affordable but uncompromising trail drivetrain, the new DEORE and DEORE XT will support you on the terrain.
